Independent Research Project Mentoring for Homeschool Teens
Explore biology, animal behaviour and conservation with a UK university Professor.
Does your teen love animals, wildlife or the natural world? I offer one-to-one or small group online mentoring to help home-schooled and independently educated students turn their curiosity into an independent research project and build a portfolio showcasing their interests and abilities.
I’m Professor Susannah Thorpe, a zoologist with over 20 years’ experience in university research, PHD student supervision, undergraduate teaching and leading international research programmes in animal behavioural ecology, great ape conservation and animal welfare.
What could your teen investigate?
# How does human behaviour differ from the other great apes?
#How can we tell whether animals in zoos and sanctuaries are thriving?
#What can animal behaviour reveal about intelligence and communication?
#How can research help protect endangered species?
Or we can develop a question around your student’s own interests.
How does it work?
Working together online over a period ranging from 8- 12 weeks, we develop a research question, explore scientific literature, evaluate evidence and present findings in a written report, presentation or other suitable format. Each project is tailored to the student’s interests, experience and ambitions. This is suitable for teens aged 16 and upwards.
The aim is to develop scientific understanding, critical thinking and independent research skills, while creating a project that can form a valuable part of an academic portfolio.
No previous research experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to explore ideas.
Get in touch to discuss your teen’s interests and potential projects!
